Where to Live in Budapest as a Student
If you’re coming to Budapest as a student or Erasmus student, Districts 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are generally some of the best areas to live in — especially the parts inside the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút), where the 4 & 6 trams run.
The Grand Boulevard is one of the main transport routes through central Budapest, and living close to it means you’ll be within easy reach of universities, shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, gyms, restaurants, bars, clubs and Budapest’s main nightlife areas.
Why live near the 4 & 6 trams?
The 4 & 6 tram line is one of the most useful transport connections in Budapest. The trams run 24 hours a day, making it easy to get around the city both during the day and at night.
Living close to the Grand Boulevard also gives you easy connections to several metro lines, buses and other tram routes, making it much easier to get to university and explore different parts of Budapest.
For students and Erasmus students, we therefore recommend looking for accommodation within or close to the Grand Boulevard, particularly in Districts 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
What about the different districts?
All of these districts have great areas, but they are quite different from one another. District 5 is very central and more touristy, while Districts 6 and 7 are popular for their cafés, restaurants, nightlife and central location. Districts 8 and 9 offer a mix of student life, local neighbourhoods, universities and increasingly popular cafés, bars and restaurants.
One important thing to remember is that the district number alone doesn’t tell you whether a location is good. A street can feel very different just a few blocks away, so the exact location of the apartment matters.
Our tip
If you’re not familiar with Budapest, look for a place close to the 4 & 6 tram line. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay well connected while living close to the centre and the places where students spend most of their time.
